CHARACTER:
Name: Iwakura Lain
Age: 14
Series: Serial Experiments Lain
Species: An entity of the Wired Network able to take on the form of a human. So, for the most part, she will exist as human and simply be able to connect into the network.
Gender: Female
Occupation: Student | Wired Goddess
Point of canon to be drawn in: Post-Episode 10, but in losing her true memories, she is considered to be Post-Episode 2.
Preferred level: Terra
Appearance: Lain is a small girl with dark brown hair and brown eyes. She is rather skinny, but she's still a growing girl. As outward appearances go, she dresses conservatively in either her school uniform or something simple. Around the house, she is known to walk around in her teddy bear pajamas or in simple clothes like a tank top and a skirt.
Lain's other personalities, however, dress differently. Her second "ego" is aggressive, and often goes to clubs and cafes just to stir up trouble. She dresses in more flattering attire, with usually a splash of make-up. The third "ego" is considered far too detached to worry about emotions, and usually doesn't care how she dresses.
Personality: Lain has three "egos" with co-exist with each other. However, she is not fully aware of the other two for now.
Her first is a shy and introverted girl with little motor skills. She is far too detatched from life to make many friends, and those she does get to know treat her as though she is just a cling-on. She's a wallflower type, and doesn't like to interact much. However, when she does, she is a sweet and gentle girl, albeit quiet and withdrawn.
The second ego is of a different sort, and Lain will lapse into her if she encounters too much pressure and becomes too unstable. The second personality is catty and demanding, a typical teenage type but far different from the outer ego of the normal Lain. She wears make up and dresses stylishly, going to clubs and meeting new people on the Network.
The third is considered Wired Lain, the ultimate ego. However, she cares nothing for "humans", being so wrapped up in the Network and the Wired to care who lives or who dies. She is intentionally cruel and malicious, and seems to take delight in hurting people who dare to cross her.
Abilities: Lain's abilities, as the first ego, are little. She has no powers, persay, but has become skilled with her Navi, or computer. No one is quite sure what Lain is (some call her a goddess), but her outward appearances suggest she is human...but this can't be so.
However, her true knowledge is far more extensive. Her true powers consist of being able to openly connect with anyone, and also to connect easily into any mainframe, software, and Navi from the comfort of her home. Her computer system is vast, but eventually she learns to download everything into her mind and subconscious. She can traverse the lines between reality and Wired at will, but only the two "other" egos can do this.
The three egos, at times, will meet and clash with each other, but this rarely happens and they seem to only be able to exist one at a time, with Layer 01 and Layer 02 Lain being the most dominant at various times. Layer 03 (Wired Lain) is not often seen or heard from.
History: Lain's true nature is never really revealed, for many things that happen can be considered lies or contradictions, but it is suggested that Lain was born in the Wired. Using her as both a social and physical experiment, she was released to a group of scientists that allowed her to move about in the open world. Her "father" was one of those scientists, and he treated her like a daughter, even coming to love her. Lain grew up believing she had a normal family, and for all intensive purposes, she did. She had a sister who was the only one in their family that was really normal and had nothing to do with the Wired or any of that.
Being a social wallflower, Lain didn't make friends easily, but she eventually came to be friends with three girls, mostly with Alice, the nicer of the three. They helped to introduce her to the Wired and Navis after one of the girls at their school committed suicide, and still sent e-mails to people three days after her death. These notes, combined with her new friendships and her father's encouragement, led Lain into her first encounter with the Wired. She was fairly good with the computer, despite her inexperience, and that's how everything began.
Drawn further and further into the Wired, strange things began to happen. Lain would act differently at strange times. Her other two egos began to appear, and left Lain without a clue as to what was happening. Slowly, she began to insist on remaining connected constantly, much to the chagrine of her father. The only other places she would go to outside of her bedroom were the club Cyberia (to meet other Wired users) and to school.
Eventually, everything came tumbling down. She struck out at a hacker group called the Knights and leaked their information everywhere, causing a series of murders to take place. Her father revealed that he wasn't her real father, and left her. Her sister committed suicide, and then she met a man who called himself God, who tried to get her to enter the Wired once and for all, so he could have command over her. She refused, and set about to make things her own way, and to fix what she had done.
False memories: Lain was born to a humble family with a father, mother, and older sister. Sadly, her mother died during a particularly cold winter after she was born. Grief-stricken, her father did all he could to keep his children safe and happy, working most of the time in the labs of Elysium with a simple job, unable to afford a comfortable living place for them since most of his money went to the mortgage and paying for their education. One thing, however, was that he got software and computers for free so that he would always have the most up-to-date equipment.
Upon seeing how many people in her school were interested in computers, Lain asked for an upgrade for her own old one. Now with a much faster computer, she is only just beginning to experience things across the Network, learning more and more each day.
